Android 是一個基於 Linux 核心的開放手機平台作業系統，對於手機程式的開發者來說，Android 是個先進的平台。編寫好的 Android Apps 更可兼容於各個型號的 Android 手機，免去為各種不同手機型號開發的困擾。

Google 提供了免費的開發工具，以方便程式開發者使用，並提供各種函式庫，和一個完整的應用程式框架(Framework)。Google 提供了一個免費的軟件下載商店 Play Store，跟 iPhone 的 App Store 分庭抗禮。
